Toledo, OH - MLK Bridge Controls Replacement

DJE provided controls engineering and integration services for the Martin Luther King (MLK) Bridge project in downtown Toledo.  Due to problems with construction on the new bridge spans, the general contractor was required to continue the operation of the old bridge over the 2006 shipping season.  DJE teamed with a local electrical contractor to provide a temporary control system for that purpose.  From the receipt of the notice to proceed to the final completion of our effort was approximately nine weeks.  DJE’s scope of services included electrical/control system design, PLC control panel and operator console construction, programming, startup and operator training of a complete dual PLC system with redundant backup on both sides of the river.  The project had to fully comply with AASHTO Movable Highway Bridge Design Specifications and fully support the existing bridge/traffic control functionality.

Zanesville, OH - WWTP

DJE provided electrical and I&C design services for the City of Zanesville Wastewater Treatment Plant Phase I and Phase II Designs.  Design included a complete new electrical power and control system infrastructure for the plant as well as VFDs for 4 primary pumps, 4 secondary pumps, 4 sludge pumps, 2 primary sludge pumps, 3 RAS/WAS pumps, and soft starters for 4 blowers.  DJE acted in the role as a sub-consultant to a large A&E firm.  Provided services included configuration of all PLC and Operator Interface software to operate the plant.

Springfield, OH - WWTP/WTP/Telemetry

The City of Springfield, Ohio recently upgraded the digester facilities at their WWTP.  As part of this project, the City upgraded the plant control systems at both the wastewater and water treatment plants.  DJE provided the control system engineering for both plants as a subconsultant to a local engineering firm.  The WWTP is an advanced secondary treatment facility with trickling filters and aeration.  The control system is Allen Bradley PLC based with a Wonderware HMI system connected by ethernet to the city-wide WAN.  Provided services included configuration of all PLC and Operator Interface software to operate the plants.

DJE has provided a telemetry study and subsequent design for the Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants. The study included overseeing a detailed computer generated table-top radio propagation study, direction of a detailed physical on-site radio propagation study, detailed construction cost analysis, recommended phasing of construction, and a design of the telemetry system architecture and panels.  The resulting telemetry architecture makes use of spread spectrum radio technology and a central repeater site to provide a city wide telemetry system for both the Water and Wastewater Plants.

Genesee County, MI - Telemetry

DJE recently completed a telemetry study for Genesee County.  The study addresses the need to move both serial SCADA information and video from approximately 130 remote sites.  The study included research of available radio technologies and frequencies, impacts on available radio frequencies due to U.S./Canadian border treaties, overseeing a detailed computer generated table-top radio propagation study, direction of a detailed physical on-site radio propagation study, investigation of existing available fiber infrastructure, detailed construction cost analysis, recommended phasing of construction, and a design of the telemetry system architecture.  The resulting telemetry architecture makes use of high frequency high speed radio equipment and repeater sites for a County-wide data backbone with sufficient bandwidth to accommodate video traffic.  Low frequency (and low speed) VHF radio equipment was used to provide foliage penetration from the backbone down to the lift stations and pump stations.

Cincinnati, OH - Raw Sewage and Pump Stations

DJE partnered with a large A&E firm to upgrade the electrical and controls at the Mill Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant Preliminary Treatment Area – Raw Sewage Pump Station.  DJE provided all I&C design for the project and all Intellution (Ifix) and Allen-Bradley PLC programming.  DJE participated in the commissioning and start-up efforts, provided RPR services (I&C) during construction, and performed training.  Of particular note on the project was the use of Allen-Bradley medium voltage VFDs to control the Raw Sewage Pumps.  The design was unique because of the use of sharing a single drive between multiple motors of different horsepower and starting characteristics.  DJE provided programming which downloaded setup parameters from libraries stored in the PLC, to the drives (via Ethernet communications), on the fly based on which motors were going to be ran.  Motor sizes ranged from 350 HP to 700 HP.

SMMWSC - Bay City, MI - Medium Voltage VFD/Power Study

DJE provided engineering services to the Saginaw-Midland Municipal Water Supply Corporation (SMMWSC) to investigate the possible installation of variable frequency drives at the Whitestone Pumping Station.  DJE reviewed the possible installation options for the new VFDs and associated switchgear and provided a report addressing how the equipment could be phased into operation and an estimate of design and construction costs.  After the report was submitted, DJE was asked to expand the study to include upgrading the voltage of the pump station and rewinding of motors to dual voltage to facilitate the phasing in of the electrical equipment.

Delphos, OH - WWTP

DJE is the controls system integrator for the new Delphos, Ohio Wastewater Treatment Plant.  As a subcontractor to the general, DJE’s scope included the design, construction, and programming of Allen Bradley ControlLogix PLC control panels and Allen Bradley Intelligent Motor Control Centers, development and the configuration of operator interface software, configuration of an MDS radio telemetry system, factory test of all provided panels, verification of the communication network, and the purchasing and field commissioning of the project’s field instrumentation.

-DJE has just recently combined two Northwest Ohio offices into one location. Our new 22,400-square-foot facility is located in the Advanced Technology Park of Northwest Ohio, adjacent to the University of Toledo Health Science Campus (formerly the Medical University of Ohio).
